Acne Treatment

While acne often develops during the teenage years, it may develop at any age. It is not unusual for adults, especially women, to develop acne. It is the most common skin condition in the U.S.

What causes acne?

Many factors play a role. Clogged pores, increased production of oil (sebum), and skin bacteria all play a role in the development of acne. For example, acne is often seen in teenage years due to increased oil (sebum) production during this time. Some studies show that diet may also influence acne in predisposed individuals.

What does acne look like?

Acne often affects the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. It may present with blackheads, whiteheads or inflammatory acne lesions (pink bumps or pus bumps, nodules or cysts). Dark spots and scarring may result, especially if acne is not treated.

What treatment options are available?

There are many effective treatment options, and each individual is unique in their response. It’s important to let your doctor know if you have dry skin, sensitive skin, or oily skin. Be sure to let your doctor know what over-the-counter or prescription products you have tried in the past, what has worked for you, what hasn’t worked for you, and if anything you have used caused a rash or irritation of the skin.

Topical medications are products that are applied to the surface (“top of”) skin, and come in the form of washes/cleansers, gels, solutions, lotions or creams. Popular over-the-counter acne products may include benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur, or adapalene. However, be aware that even over-the-counter acne medications can cause dryness, irritation or allergic reactions. Prescription topical medications include a wide range of antibiotics, retinoids, and anti-inflammatory agents.

Oral medications are medications taken by mouth and require a prescription. Antibiotics, hormonal medications and isotretinoin (if appropriate) are examples of oral medications used for acne.

In-office treatments are treatments that are done in the dermatology office. Chemical peels, steroid injections and acne extraction are in-office treatments that may improve acne.
